Amigurumi Cats in a Basket
Materials:
- Yarn: 100% acrylic yarn in various colors (blue, yellow, gray, red, purple, and black)
- Weight: DK/8ply (Approx. 100g each color)
- Hook: 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Safety eyes: 12mm (for the eyes of the cats)
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill
- Yarn needle (for sewing parts together and weaving in ends)
- Small decorations: Felt, beads (for embellishing the cats)
Gauge:
4 rows of single crochet = 1 inch. To measure your gauge, crochet a small swatch of 10 stitches and 10 rows in single crochet. Measure the width and height to ensure you are on gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- dec = decrease (2 sc together)
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- R = round
Instructions:
Body of the Cat: (Make 3)
Start with the main color yarn. We're creating a solid body, working in continuous rounds.
- R1: Make a magic circle and ch 1. Work 6 sc into the circle (6 st)
- R2: Inc in each st around (12 st)
- R3: *1 sc, inc* repeat around (18 st)
- R4: *2 sc, inc* repeat around (24 st)
- R5-R10: Sc in each st around (24 st)
- R11: *2 sc, dec* repeat around (18 st)
- R12: *1 sc, dec* repeat around (12 st)
- At this point, start stuffing your cat with fiberfill carefully.
- R13: Dec around (6 st). Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Tail: (Make 3)
- Using the same color yarn, ch 30.
- Starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. Fasten off and leave a tail to attach.
Ears: (Make 6: 2 for each cat)
- Start with a magic circle and ch 1. Work 4 sc into the circle. Pull tight and join with a sl st.
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew onto the head.
Assembly:
- Attach the ears to the top of the head using the long tail.
- Sew on the safety eyes. You can use a small piece of felt for the nose if desired.
- Embroider whiskers using black yarn or felt.
- Attach the tail to the back of the body, ensuring it’s secure.
Dress up your cats:
- Feel free to add decorations like beads or felt flowers on the cats to give them personality!
Placing in the Basket:
- Use any small woven basket you have, and place your finished cats inside for display.
Finishing Tips:
- Weave in all loose ends securely with a yarn needle.
- If desired, block the pieces lightly to help them hold their shape.
