Cozy Crochet Cat Cave (Dome Style)

Cozy Crochet Cat Cave (Dome Style)

This soft, cave-like cat bed gives your furry friend a sense of comfort and privacy. Made in one continuous spiral using thick yarn, it's structured yet flexible — perfect for curling up in style.

Materials
– Super bulky yarn (approx. 400–500g, cotton or t-shirt yarn recommended)
– 10 mm crochet hook
– Stitch marker
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors

Instructions

  1. Base Circle (worked in spiral):

    • Make magic ring.

    • Round 1: 6 sc into ring. (6)

    • Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)

    • Round 3: Sc 1, 2 sc in next, repeat. (18)

    • Continue increasing evenly until you have a flat circle with approx. 45 cm diameter (around 72–78 sts total depending on gauge).

  2. Walls:

    • Without increasing, work 1 sc in each st around for 10–12 rounds to build vertical sides.

    • To shape dome, begin decreasing:

      • Sc 10, sc2tog repeat around

      • Repeat decrease rows every 2 rounds until only ~30 sts remain.

  3. Entrance Hole:

    • When about 1/3 of dome remains, stop in the round where you want the front opening.

    • Instead of full rounds, work back-and-forth rows over 2/3 of the stitches to leave a half-moon gap.

    • Continue decreasing only on those rows until the top is shaped and closed.

  4. Finishing:

    • Weave in ends securely.

    • Stuff lightly or block into shape using towels or a pillow inside.

How To

  1. Stiff Yarn Needed:
Use t-shirt yarn or rope-like yarns to help the bed hold its dome shape.

  2. Gauge Flexibility:
Don’t worry about exact stitch counts — just aim for the right dimensions.

  3. Washability:
Choose machine-washable yarns if your cat tends to shed or drag dirt in.

  4. Add Padding:
Place a small pillow or round mat inside for extra softness.

  5. Ventilation Tip:
You can leave small holes along the dome sides if you want airflow.
