Crochet Sunflower Coaster
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn in yellow (about 50g)
- Small amount of brown worsted weight yarn (about 10g)
- Small amount of green worsted weight yarn (about 10g)
- 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
- Fiberfill stuffing (optional, for a 3D effect)
- Blunt needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
While gauge isn't crucial for this project, a tight enough tension will keep your coaster shape intact. To check your gauge, crochet a small circle and measure it. Each round should measure about 4 inches across for the finished sunflower.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
Instructions:
Center (Brown):
- Start with a magic ring. (Alternatively, ch 4 and join to form a ring.)
- Round 1: 6 sc in the ring. (6 sc)
- Round 2: Inc in each sc around (2 sc in each stitch). (12 sc)
- Round 3: *1 sc, inc* repeat around. (18 sc)
- Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Petals (Yellow):
- Starting in the front loop of any stitch from the brown center, attach your yellow yarn.
- Round 1: 1 dc in the same stitch, then ch 2. Slip stitch into the same stitch to form a petal. (Repeat in the next 5 stitches to form 6 petals total)
- Fasten off and weave in ends neatly.
Leaf (Green):
- Ch 6.
- Row 1: Starting in the second ch from hook, sc in each ch back down (5 sc).
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Skip first sc, then sc in next 3 stitches, dc in last stitch. (5 sc, 1 dc)
- Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Skip first sc, then sc in 3 stitches, sl st in last stitch. (3 sc, 1 sl st)
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Attach to the top of the sunflower.
Finishing:
If desired, stuff the middle of the sunflower slightly for a 3D effect. Weave in all ends using your blunt needle. To help your coaster hold its shape, consider blocking it. Simply dampen it and shape it to the desired size, allowing it to dry flat.
Optional Variations:
- Try using variegated yarn for the petals for a fun and unique look!
- Make several in different colors to create a set for gifting or home decor.
