Instructions:
Hat:
- CO 36 stitches in your desired color for the hat using DPNs.
- Join in the round, being cautious not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
- Work in 1x1 ribbing (k1, p1) for 10 rounds.
- Switch to stockinette stitch and knit for 12 rounds. Change colors as desired for stripes.
- To shape the top of the hat, decrease as follows: k6, k2tog; repeat this around (32 stitches). Do this decrease every other round until you have 8 stitches remaining.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight, securing the top of the hat.
Body:
- CO 28 stitches in a contrasting color for the body. Join in the round.
- Work in stockinette stitch for 14 rounds until it reaches the desired length of about 3 inches.
- To create the bottom, decrease by k6, k2tog every round until you have 8 stitches left.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long enough tail to sew the body closed. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.
Assembly:
- Take the wooden bead and place it on top of the body, securing with a few stitches if needed.
- Attach the hat to the bead, making sure it fits snugly.
- Embellish with a small button or button, stitching it onto the body for a cute detail.
- Add yarn strands for hair below the hat if desired.
- Wrap a shorter piece of yarn around the neck area to create a scarf effect, tie in a knot or bow.
Finishing Tips:
- Weave in any loose ends using the tapestry needle.
- Consider lightly blocking the pieces to help them hold their shape, but for small items like these gnomes, it may not be necessary.
Optional Variations:
- Vary the color combinations and patterns for each gnome to give them unique personalities.
- Add small crafting embellishments like stars or hearts for extra charm.
