Materials
– Worsted weight yarn (20g, cotton or acrylic blend)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– 1 wooden button (approx. 2 cm)
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors

Instructions

  1. Cast On: 18 stitches.

  2. Moss Stitch Pattern:

    • Row 1: (K1, P1) repeat to end.

    • Row 2: (P1, K1) repeat to end.

    • Repeat these two rows until the piece measures approx. 22 cm.

  3. Buttonhole (optional):

    • On a right side row near one end: Work 8 sts in pattern, bind off 2 sts, finish row.

    • Next row: Work in pattern to bound-off gap, cast on 2 sts, continue to end.

  4. Final Rows: Work 2 more rows in pattern.

  5. Bind Off: Loosely in pattern.

  6. Finishing: Weave in ends, sew button opposite the buttonhole side.

How To

  1. Moss vs Seed Stitch: Moss stitch alternates every row, unlike seed which alternates every stitch.

  2. Don’t Pull Tight: Keep an even tension to prevent curling or puckering.

  3. Yarn Choice Tip: Cotton gives structure; acrylic makes it soft and stretchy.

  4. Button Tip: Sew the button last so it fits exactly where your mug’s handle aligns.

  5. Washable: Choose yarns that tolerate machine washing for long-term use.
