Colorful Crochet Heart Applique

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton yarn in blue, yellow, and white (total of approximately 50 yards)
4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:

For this project, gauge is not crucial, but if you’d like to check, you can crochet a square measuring 4" x 4" in single crochet. You should have about 16 stitches and 20 rows. If your square is significantly larger or smaller, try a different hook size.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet

Instructions:

Heart Shape:

With yellow yarn, create a magic ring. This means to make a loop and chain 3. This chain counts as a double crochet.
In the magic ring, make 2 more dc, ch 2, and 3 dc. This creates one side of the heart. You should have 6 double crochets and 2 chains.
Pull the magic ring to tighten the center.
Turn your work and work on the opposite side: chain 2 and then make 3 dc, ch 2, and 3 dc in the magic ring again.
Join with a sl st to the top of the original chain 3. This forms the heart shape.

White Round:

Change to white yarn: attach in any stitch at the base of the heart.
Make a round of sc around the entire heart. Make sure to add a sc in each dc and ch 2 space. Slip stitch to join when finished.

Blue Round:

Change to blue yarn: attach in any stitch of the white round.
Ch 1, then make 1 sc in the same stitch.
Make 2 sc in each of the next stitches around. This will give the heart a wider border. Join with a sl st.

Finishing:

Cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop to secure it.
Using a tapestry needle, weave in all loose ends to the back of the heart.
If desired, you can block the heart to make it more defined. Simply wet the heart and pin it to your desired shape.
