Colorful Granny Square Scarf
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (approx. 300 yards in orange and yellow)
- Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (5 mm)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
For a granny square, 4 inches = 8 stitches in double crochet. To measure gauge, create a small swatch of double crochet (a sample of 10 stitches and 10 rows), then measure how many stitches fit in a 4-inch square.
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp – space
Instructions:
Granny Squares:
- Start with a slip knot and chain 4. Join to form a ring with a slip stitch.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc into the ring, ch 2. *Work 3 dc into the ring, ch 2; repeat from * two more times (total of 4 clusters). Join with sl st to top of ch 3. You should have a total of 4 clusters.
- Round 2: Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2 and 3 dc in the same sp. *In the next ch-2 sp, work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; repeat from * until all 4 spaces are completed. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
- Round 3: Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space. Ch 3, work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, and 3 dc in the same sp. *In the next ch-2 sp, work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; repeat from * until all spaces are completed. You will have 8 clusters now. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
- Continue working in this manner, adding rounds as you prefer, until your squares measure approximately 6 inches across.
Creating the Scarf:
Make a total of 10 granny squares to create the scarf. Once finished, join them together by placing them side by side.
- To join the squares, hold two squares together with the right sides facing up. Insert your hook into the first stitch of both squares, yarn over, and pull through. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook. This is a slip stitch join.
- Continue joining the squares until they are all attached in a long row.
Finishing:
- Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle to give your scarf a clean finish.
- For added snugness, you can block your scarf by wetting it, laying it flat, and pinning it into shape as it dries.
Optional Variation: Add a fringe at the ends of the scarf by cutting several strands of yarn, folding them in half, and pulling the loop through the last stitch of each end of the scarf.
