Crocheted Pumpkin
Materials:
- Yarn: Medium weight (Category 4) acrylic yarn in red (approx. 100g) and green (approx. 20g)
- Hook: 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
- Fiberfill stuffing (for cushion if desired)
- Tapestry needle (for weaving ends)
- Scissors
Gauge:
For this project, a gauge of 14 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches in single crochet (sc) is ideal. To check your gauge, make a 4" x 4" swatch in single crochet and measure the stitches and rows. Adjust hook size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- st = stitch
- rnd = round
- sl st = slip stitch
Instructions:
- Start with the pumpkin body: Using the red yarn, make a magic ring (or ch 2 and work into the second chain from the hook) to begin.
- Rnd 1: 6 sc into the magic ring. (6 st)
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12 st)
- Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* repeat around. (18 st)
- Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* repeat around. (24 st)
- Rnd 5-10: Sc in each stitch around for 6 rounds. (24 st)
- Rnd 11: *2 sc, dec* (decrease by working 2 sc together) repeat around. (18 st)
- Rnd 12: *1 sc, dec* repeat around. (12 st)
- Now, stuff the pumpkin lightly with fiberfill if desired.
- Rnd 13: Dec around. (6 st)
- Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull the tail through the remaining stitches and tighten to close the hole. Secure and weave in ends.
- Creating the segments: Use a piece of yarn to create indents. Tie a knot in the center of the top and pull through the middle to create a squared section on the pumpkin, then tie off.
- For the stem: Switch to the green yarn.
- Ch 6, and then sc back down the chain. (5 st)
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch. Repeat this row until the stem reaches about 3 inches. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
- Use the tail to sew the stem to the top center of the pumpkin. Secure it well and weave in any remaining ends.
Finishing Tips:
After finishing the pumpkin, consider blocking it to enhance the shape. This can also help to even out stitches. To block, lightly mist the finished pumpkin with water and shape as desired, allowing it to dry completely.
