Colorful Striped Scarf
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in the following colors: light green, dark green, coral, navy, and multi-color for fringe (approximately 200-250 yards total)
- Needles: US Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
- Scissors
Gauge:
For this project, a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch. To measure your gauge, knit a 4x4 inch swatch and count the number of stitches and rows within that area.
Abbreviations:
- CO: Cast On
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- RS: Right Side
- WS: Wrong Side
- St(s): Stitch(es)
Instructions:
Step 1: CO 30 stitches using your preferred cast-on method.
Step 2: Begin the pattern:
Row 1 (RS): K1, P1 across the row. (This creates a ribbing effect.)
Row 2 (WS): P1, K1 across the row.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for the first 6 rows.
Step 3: Start the stripes:
Row 7 (RS): Change to light green yarn and knit across the row.
Row 8 (WS): Purl across with the same light green yarn.
Row 9-12: Continue in light green yarn.
Row 13 (RS): Switch to dark green yarn and knit across the row.
Row 14 (WS): Purl across with dark green yarn.
Row 15-18: Continue in dark green yarn.
Row 19 (RS): Change to coral yarn and knit across.
Row 20 (WS): Purl across with coral yarn.
Row 21-24: Continue with coral yarn.
Row 25 (RS): Switch to navy yarn and knit across.
Row 26 (WS): Purl across with navy yarn.
Row 27-30: Continue with navy yarn.
Step 4: Repeat the stripe pattern for a total of 10 stripes, alternating colors as desired. The scarf should measure approximately 60 inches long at this point.
Step 5: Bind off with a loose bind-off method. (Knit 2 stitches, lift the first stitch over the second and off the needle. Repeat until one stitch remains, then cut yarn and pull through.)
Step 6: Create the fringe:
Cut 12-inch lengths of the multi-color yarn. Fold each strand in half and tie it through the ends of the scarf, creating a tassel effect. Make sure to distribute the colors evenly along each end.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle. You may block your scarf by lightly steaming it to enhance the stripes and make the fabric lay flat.
Optional Variations:
Try varying the number of rows for each color for different effects, or experiment with different yarn fiber contents for a unique texture.
