Crochet Hanging Heart Ornament
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight cotton yarn in peach (approximately 50 yards)
- Hook: 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this project, but for reference, 4 single crochets (sc) = 1 inch. To check gauge, make a small swatch (4x4 inches) and count the stitches.
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- R: row
Instructions:
Heart Shape:
1. Start by creating a magic ring. If you're unsure how to do this, simply ch 2 and work into the second chain from the hook.
2. R1: In the magic ring (or second ch if you’re using that method), work 6 sc. Pull the ring tight and join with a sl st to the first sc. (6 sc)
3. R2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sc)
4. R3: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (18 sc)
5. R4: Ch 1, *sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc)
6. R5: Ch 1, *sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (30 sc)
7. R6: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (30 sc)
8. R7: Ch 1, *sc in the next 3 sts, sc2tog (single crochet two together) in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc)
9. R8: Ch 1, *sc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (18 sc)
10. R9: Ch 1, *sc in the next st, sc2tog in the next st*. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sc)
11. R10: Ch 1, sc2tog around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (6 sc)
12. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull the tail through the last loop to secure.
Finishing:
1. Use the tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends on the heart.
2. To create a loop for hanging, cut a piece of yarn about 12 inches long. Thread it through one of the top stitches of the heart, tie a knot to secure, and make a loop. This will allow you to hang your heart ornament anywhere!
Blocking:
Lightly steam block your heart to help shape it if you wish. Be careful not to get the yarn too wet.
Optional Variations:
1. Use multiple colors of yarn to create a striped heart! Just change colors at the end of your desired rows.
2. Add embellishments like small beads or embroidery for personal touches.
