Crochet Sunflower Bag
Materials:
- Yarn: Medium weight (Worsted) cotton yarn in beige, yellow, rust/orange, and light brown (approximately 200 yards each of beige, 50 yards yellow, 25 yards rust/orange, and 25 yards light brown)
- Hook: 4.5 mm (G) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving ends
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Gauge:
12 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in double crochet. To measure gauge, create a small swatch that is 4x4 inches and count the stitches and rows.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sp = space
Instructions:
1. Base of the Bag:
- Start with the beige yarn.
- Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first dc), then work 11 dc into the circle. Pull tight and join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3 (12 dc total).
- Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the same stitch, then 2 dc in each stitch around, join (24 dc total).
- Round 3: Ch 3, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in the following stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (36 dc total).
- Round 4: Ch 3, *dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (48 dc total).
- Round 5: Ch 3, *dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (60 dc total).
- Round 6: Ch 3, *dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join (72 dc total).
2. Sunflower Motif:
- Switch to yellow yarn.
- Round 1: In next stitch, ch 1, sc, then ch 2 (this creates the petal base), *skip next stitch, sc in next stitch, ch 2*, repeat from * to * around (you should have 12 petals).
- Round 2: In each ch-2 sp, work 4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc (this creates the petal shape). Join with sl st to the first dc of the round.
- Switch to rust/orange yarn.
- Round 3: In each ch-1 sp, sc to join, then ch 3 (petal point), sc in the same space (that brings your petal point back down), do this around for each petal.
- Switch to light brown yarn and attach in the center.
- Round 4: Sc in each adjacent stitch around the center (to create dimension) to finish the sunflower motif.
3. Assembling the Bag:
- Attach the sunflower motif to the front of the bag using small stitches or slip stitches to secure it in place.
- Strap: Chain 120 using the beige yarn and sl st back to the base to form a strap.
- Repeat for a second strap, if desired. Attach both ends of the straps to the sides of the bag.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends using the yarn needle.
- Optional: Block your bag lightly to shape it as desired by spritzing it with water and placing it in the desired shape to dry.
Variations:
- Try using different colors for the petals to create a unique sunflower design. You can also vary the size of the bag by altering the number of rounds in the base.
