Cute Crochet Octopus
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (size 4) in blue (about 50 yards), white (for the optional belly), and any other color for accents (optional)
- Size G (4.0mm) crochet hook
- Safety eyes (8mm) or black yarn for eyes
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
Gauge is not critical for this project, but for a tighter finish, aim for about 12 stitches and 12 rows in 4 inches using single crochet.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- dec = decrease (crochet 2 stitches together)
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
Instructions:
Body:
- Start with a magic ring (or ch 2 and work into the second ch from the hook).
- Round 1: 6 sc in the ring (6 stitches).
- Round 2: Inc in each st around (12 stitches).
- Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st* repeat around (18 stitches).
- Round 4: *Sc in next 2 st, inc in next st* repeat around (24 stitches).
- Rounds 5-12: Sc in each st around (24 stitches) for 8 rounds. This creates the body of the octopus.
- Round 13: *Sc in next 2 st, dec* repeat around (18 stitches).
- Round 14: *Sc in next st, dec* repeat around (12 stitches). Now is a good time to stuff the body lightly.
- Round 15: Dec around (6 stitches). Finish off and weave in the end.
Arms (make 8):
- Start with a magic ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc in the ring (6 stitches).
- Round 2: *Sc in next st, inc in next st* repeat around (9 stitches).
- Rounds 3-8: Sc in each st around (9 stitches) for 6 rounds.
- Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff lightly.
To attach the arms, evenly space them around the body and sew them in place using the tails you left.
Finishing:
- Attach safety eyes to the body between rounds 8 and 9, or embroider eyes with black yarn.
- Optionally, crochet a small circle with white yarn and sew it onto the bottom of the octopus for a belly.
- Weave in all loose ends.
- If desired, gently block the octopus to shape it, using a damp cloth and pinning it to your desired shape.
Optional Variations:
You can make stripes on the arms by changing yarn colors every few rows. Try different colors for different octopus friends!
