Gradient Texture Crochet Shrug

Gradient Texture Crochet Shrug

This relaxed-fit crochet shrug is a perfect layering piece — light, breathable, and shaped from a simple rectangle with folded sleeves. Featuring subtle ribbed texture and a soft gradient yarn, it's a modern take on effortless handmade fashion.

Materials

  • 250–300g gradient or ombré DK weight yarn

  • 5.0 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

  • Stitch markers

Measurements (One Size - adjustable)

  • Rectangle: approx. 95 cm wide x 45 cm tall before folding

  • Fits S–L; adjust width/height for larger sizes by adding stitches/rows in multiples of 2

Instructions

  1. Main Body Panel:

    • Ch 122 (or any even number for width)

    • Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across (121 hdc)

    • Row 2: ch 1, hdc in back loop only (BLO) across

    • Repeat Row 2 until piece measures approx. 45 cm in height (ribbed texture will form)

    • Fasten off and weave in ends

  2. Sleeve Construction:

    • Fold the rectangle horizontally (long side to long side)

    • Measure 18 cm inward from each short edge and place stitch markers

    • Seam sides from edge to marker using slip stitch or whip stitch — leaving openings for sleeves

  3. Finishing Edges (Optional):

    • With right side facing out, join yarn to bottom edge of front opening

    • Sc evenly around entire front edge and collar for a clean border (1–2 rows)

How To

  1. Yarn Tip: Gradient or color-changing yarn creates a two-tone effect naturally — avoid cutting yarn to maintain flow

  2. Fit Tip: Try the rectangle against your back/shoulders before seaming to ensure proper sleeve and body width

  3. Edge Option: For a neater collar, add 1–2 rows of single crochet or front-post stitches along the opening

  4. Stretch Note: Ribbed texture allows natural stretch — block gently to open up stitches without distorting the shape

  5. Custom Sizing: To make plus-size, increase starting chain by 12–16 sts and add 2–3 more texture rows
