Pattern Instructions:
Body of the Pumpkin:
- Cast on 40 stitches in orange yarn.
- Row 1 (RS): *K1, P1; repeat from * to end.
- Row 2 (WS): K all stitches.
- Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have a piece that is 5 inches tall, or about 30 rows.
- Next, switch to stockinette stitch (knit all rows) and continue for 2 more inches (about 12 rows).
- Next, begin decreasing.
- Row 1: K2tog across the row (20 stitches).
- Row 2: Purl all stitches.
- Row 3: K2tog across the row (10 stitches).
- Row 4: Purl all stitches.
- Row 5: K2tog across the row (5 stitches). You should have 5 remaining stitches.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the pumpkin. Secure and weave in the end.
- Stuff the pumpkin with fiberfill until it is firm but squishy.
- To create sections, use a long piece of yarn (about 18 inches) and stitch down through the center to the bottom, then back up to make a loop. Repeat around the pumpkin for 4-5 sections.
Stem:
- Using beige yarn, cast on 10 stitches.
- Knit in garter stitch (knit every row) for about 3 inches.
- Bind off and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
- Stuff the stem lightly and sew it securely on top of the pumpkin.
Finishing:
Weave in any loose ends using a tapestry needle. For a polished look, consider lightly blocking your pumpkin by steaming it with an iron on a low setting (make sure to protect the yarn). You can also add a few leaves made from green yarn or crochet if you wish.
Optional Variations:
Experiment with different yarn colors for a unique pumpkin patch! You can also make smaller pumpkins by reducing the stitch count.
