Heart-Shaped Crochet Coaster
Materials:
- Yarn: Medium weight (worsted) acrylic yarn in red (approximately 100 grams)
- Yarn: Medium weight (worsted) acrylic yarn in white for the edging (approximately 50 grams)
- Crochet hook size H/8 (5 mm)
Gauge:
Gauge is not critical for this project, but for reference, 16 stitches and 18 rows equal a 4" square in double crochet.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
Instructions:
Foundation Row:
- Make a magic ring.
- Chain 2 (this counts as your first dc), then work 2 dc into the ring. You now have 3 dc in the ring.
- Chain 1, then work 3 dc into the ring. Continue this pattern: chain 1, 3 dc for a total of 6 times (you’ll have 6 groups of 3 dc separated by chain 1 spaces).
- Pull tight on the magic ring to close it, and then join with a sl st to the top of the first chain 2. (Total will be about 6 chain spaces)
Row 1: Shape the Heart
- Chain 2 (this counts as your first dc).
- Work 2 dc into the first chain space.
- In the next chain space, work 3 dc, chain 1, and 3 dc (this forms a corner).
- In the next chain space, work 2 dc.
- In the next chain space, work 3 dc, chain 1, and 3 dc (this forms another corner).
- In the next chain space, work 2 dc.
- In the last chain space, work 3 dc, chain 1, and 3 dc.
- Join with a sl st to the top of the first chain 2. (You should now have 12 dc total).
Row 2: Continue the Heart Shape
- Chain 2, then work 2 dc into the same space.
- In the next space, work 2 dc, chain 1, and 2 dc.
- In the next two spaces, work 2 dc each.
- In the next space, work 2 dc, chain 1, and 2 dc.
- In the last space, work 2 dc.
- Join with a sl st to the top of the first chain 2.
Edging:
- Switch to white yarn. Chain 1 and sc evenly around the outer edge of the heart.
- On the corners (where the “v” shapes are) you can do 3 sc to keep it rounded.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Finishing:
- Cut yarn and pull through the loop on your hook to secure.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave in any ends securely.
- For a flat finish, you can block your coaster by lightly steaming it.
Optional Variations:
- Use different colors for the heart and edging to match your decor.
- Add additional rounds for a larger coaster.
