Ocean Breeze Shawl
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight (approximately 400-500 yards) in gradient blues and greens
- Needles: US size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
14 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch. To check your gauge, knit a swatch that is at least 4 inches by 4 inches, then measure how many stitches fit in that space.
Abbreviations:
- k = knit
- p = purl
- yo = yarn over
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
Instructions:
- Cast On: Cast on 3 stitches using your long-tail cast-on method.
- Row 1 (RS): k all stitches. (3 stitches)
- Row 2 (WS): k1, yo, k1, yo, k1. (5 stitches)
- Row 3 (RS): k all stitches. (5 stitches)
- Row 4 (WS): k2, yo, k1, yo, k2. (7 stitches)
- Row 5 (RS): k all stitches. (7 stitches)
- Continue increasing by one stitch every other row and knitting every row until you reach approximately 60 inches or until your shawl measures the desired length. Your last row should be a RS row.
- Border: To create a beautiful edge, knit the last two rows as follows:
- Row 1: k all stitches.
- Row 2: k2tog (knit two together) across the row to decrease to 3 stitches.
- Bind Off: Bind off all stitches loosely.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle. To enhance the drape of the shawl, you may want to soak it in lukewarm water, gently squeeze out the excess water, and lay it flat to dry (blocking).
Optional Variations:
- Add lace borders for a more intricate design.
- Incorporate different colors for a striped effect.
