Simple Knitted Headband
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (approximately 100 yards) in a soft pink color.
- Needles: A pair of US size 8 (5mm) knitting needles.
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends.
Gauge:
10 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. To measure gauge, knit a swatch that is at least 4 inches square, then measure the number of stitches in a 4-inch section.
Abbreviations:
- CO: Cast On
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
Instructions:
- Cast On: Start by casting on 16 stitches. This will create a snug fit for the headband.
- Row 1: Knit all stitches across the row (16 stitches).
- Row 2: Purl all stitches across the row (16 stitches).
- Row 3: Repeat Row 1. (16 stitches)
- Row 4: Repeat Row 2. (16 stitches)
- Continue this pattern (knit one row, purl the next) until your work measures about 20 inches in length or your desired length for a headband. You may increase or decrease the number of rows based on your preferred width, but keep in mind that the headband should be around 3 inches wide.
- Binding Off: Once you reach your desired length, bind off all stitches. Use the following method: Knit 2 stitches, then pull the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle. Continue this until all stitches are bound off.
- Finishing: Cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Use a tapestry needle to weave in all ends securely on the wrong side of the work.
Blocking:
If desired, gently block your headband by wetting it and laying it flat to dry. This helps even out the stitches and gives your piece a polished look.
Optional Variations:
You can customize your headband by adding buttons, embellishments, or even patterned stitches like ribbing or cable knit! Just remember to adjust your stitch count if you significantly change the style.
