Striped Chunky Knit Scarf
Materials:
- Yarn: 2 skeins (180 yards each) of bulky weight yarn in multiple colors (charcoal gray, deep teal, mustard yellow, and rust red).
- Needles: Size 9 (5.5 mm) circular or straight needles, 16 inches long.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge:
14 stitches and 18 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch. To measure gauge, knit a swatch of 20 stitches and 20 rows, then measure the dimensions. Make sure to block the swatch for accurate gauge.
Abbreviations:
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- YO: Yarn Over
- RS: Right Side
- WS: Wrong Side
Instructions:
Cast On: Cast on 30 stitches using the long tail cast-on method.
Row 1 (RS): K across all stitches.
Row 2 (WS): P across all stitches.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you reach a length of 60 inches or desired length.
Color Changes: Change yarn color every 8 rows to create a striped effect. Start with charcoal gray, then switch to teal, mustard yellow, and rust red. Be sure to carry the unused yarn along the edges and twist them on every color change to avoid holes.
Last Row: Knit one last row in charcoal gray to finish the scarf neatly.
Bind Off: Bind off all stitches loosely (this prevents the edge from being too tight!).
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle. For a polished look, block your scarf by soaking it in lukewarm water, gently pressing out the excess water, and laying it flat to dry.
Optional Variations: You can add fringes to the ends of the scarf for a fun touch, or try experimenting with different color combinations according to the season!
