Textured Chunky Scarf
Materials:
- Yarn: Bulky weight (Category 5), approximately 300 yards in mixed colors (orange, cream, and rust).
- Needles: Size 10.5 (6.5mm) circular knitting needles, 16" length.
- Scissors.
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends.
Gauge:
4 stitches and 6 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch. To measure gauge, knit a swatch of 20 stitches and 20 rows and measure the dimensions when laid flat.
Abbreviations:
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- CO: Cast On
- BO: Bind Off
Instructions:
Step 1: Begin by casting on 30 stitches. This will give you a width of approximately 12 inches.
Step 2: Knit every row (this is known as garter stitch) until the scarf measures about 72 inches in length. This will take approximately 45 rows.
Step 3: For added texture, you may choose to add some rows of purl stitches. For instance, alternate every 5 rows with 1 row of purl stiches, giving the scarf a unique look. This can be done as follows:
- Row 1-5: Knit
- Row 6: Purl
- Repeat until the desired length is reached.
Step 4: Once you have reached the desired length of 72 inches, bind off all stitches loosely to maintain elasticity.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle. To finish your scarf, block it by dampening it with a spray bottle and laying it flat to dry. This helps to set the stitches and give it a polished look.
Optional Variations:
You can customize your scarf by incorporating different color patterns or stitches, such as ribbing, or even adding fringe to the ends for a fun touch.
