Baby Groot Costume
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in brown, green, and black (approximately 200g brown, 50g green, and 20g black)
- Hook: 5mm (H) crochet hook
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Gauge:
Gauge is not critical for this project, but aim for 12 stitches per 4 inches in single crochet (sc). To measure gauge, crochet a small square of 4 inches by 4 inches in sc and count your stitches across and rows down.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sl st - slip stitch
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- inc - increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- st(s) - stitch(es)
Instructions:
Baby Groot Hat:
- Start with a magic ring and ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Round 1: 10 sc in the magic ring (10 sts).
- Round 2: Inc in each st around (20 sts).
- Round 3: *1 sc, inc* repeat around (30 sts).
- Round 4: *2 sc, inc* repeat around (40 sts).
- Round 5-10: 1 sc in each st around (40 sts). Continue until hat measures about 6 inches from the top to the bottom edge.
- Change to green yarn and ch 1, then sc in the top 5 sts, sl st to join with the first sc to form a leaf shape.
- For the eyes, cut two small circles from black felt or yarn and sew or glue them onto the hat. Use brown yarn to stitch an eyebrow above each eye.
- Finish off and weave in ends.
Baby Groot Outfit:
- Using brown yarn, ch 40 (or enough to go around the baby's chest). Join to form a circle, being careful not to twist.
- Round 1: Sc in each stitch around (40 sts).
- Round 2: Inc in each 5th stitch around (48 sts).
- Rounds 3-10: Sc in each stitch around (48 sts) until the body measures 8 inches from the starting chain.
- To create arms: Ch 20 in brown, sc in each stitch, then fold and stitch to the body, ensuring they fit comfortably on each side.
- For the leaves, ch 3 with green yarn, then dc in the second ch from hook and 1 sc in the last ch. Attach to the costume randomly along the arms and body for a whimsical look.
Finishing Tips:
Carefully weave in all loose ends with a yarn needle for a clean finish. To keep the costume in shape, consider blocking the finished hat and outfit gently. You can also customize the outfit by adding more leaves or changing the sizes of the hat and body for different fits.
Optional Variations:
For a more adorable look, consider adding tiny branches made from brown pipe cleaners inserted into the hat. Additionally, you can modify the color shades to create different versions of Groot outfits!
