Basic Crochet Granny Square
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight cotton yarn (approx. 50g)
- Hook: 5.0mm (H) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
To check your gauge, crochet a swatch that measures 4 inches by 4 inches. You should have about 8 double crochets and 4 rows in that square. If your gauge is off, adjust your hook size accordingly.
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- sp: space
Instructions:
- Start with a Slip Knot: Make a slip knot with your yarn.
- Foundation Chain: Ch 4 (this forms your first round).
- Join to form a ring: Insert your hook into the first ch to form a ring. Sl st to join.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc), then make 2 more dc into the ring. Ch 2 (this creates the corner), then make 3 dc into the ring. Repeat this step 2 more times so you have 3 sets of 3 dc. Ch 2 to finish. You should have a total of 12 dc and 3 ch-2 spaces.
- Join: Sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 to close the round.
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then 2 dc in the same sp. Ch 1. In the next ch-2 sp, make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Repeat this for each of the 3 ch-2 spaces. End with a sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3.
- Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1. In each ch-2 sp, make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. In each corner, ch 1 after completing the 3 dc. Repeat for all sides. Finish with a sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3.
- Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the loop on your hook to secure. Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
Optional Variations:
Try using different colors for each round or make larger granny squares by adding more rounds. You can also join multiple squares together for a blanket or bag!
Finishing Tips:
To finish your project, consider blocking your squares by gently stretching them to shape and pinning them until dry. This helps them look neat and uniform.
