Basic Crochet Lace Scarf
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (100% acrylic or cotton) - approximately 200 yards in cream/white color
- Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
Gauge:
To measure gauge, crochet a 4" x 4" square: 15 double crochets (dc) across and 8 rows = 4". Adjust your hook size if needed to meet this gauge for the scarf to turn out the correct size.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- dc - double crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
- sp - space
Instructions:
- Foundation Chain: Make a slipknot and chain 30 stitches. This will be the width of your scarf.
- Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, make 1 dc. This creates your first dc. Continue making 1 dc in each chain across (total of 28 dc). Turn your work.
- Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc). In the first dc, make another dc. *Ch 1, skip 1 dc, make 2 dc in the next dc.* Repeat from * to * until you reach the end. You should end with a ch 1 and 1 dc in the last dc. Turn your work.
- Row 3: Ch 3, make 1 dc in the first sp (the ch 1 space). *Ch 1, make 2 dc in the next ch 1 space.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. End with 1 dc in the last sp. Turn your work.
- Repeat Rows 2 and 3: Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until your work measures approximately 60 inches long or until you reach desired length.
- Final Row: Finish with 1 more row of dc for a clean edge. Turn your work, chain 3, and dc across the row.
- Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Pull the tail through the last loop and tighten. With the tapestry needle, weave in any loose ends along the edges of your scarf.
Blocking: To achieve a more defined shape, gently wash and lay flat to dry, shaping the scarf into your desired dimensions.
Optional Variations: Experiment with different colors or yarn textures to customize your scarf. You can also add fringe at the ends for an added design element.
