Abbreviations:
- CH: Chain
- SC: Single Crochet
- DC: Double Crochet
- SL ST: Slip Stitch
- FO: Fasten Off
Instructions:
This cocoon is made from two main parts: the base and the polka dots.
Base:
- With the red yarn, make a slip knot and CH 25.
- Row 1: In the second CH from the hook, SC across. (24 SC)
- Row 2: CH 1, turn; SC in each stitch across. Repeat this row until you reach 30 rows total or until the piece measures approximately 14 inches in length.
- At the end of the last row, CH 1 and turn, but do not fasten off.
Shaping the Cocoon:
- To begin rounding the cocoon, from the last row, continue to work in the next row: CH 1, SC in the first stitch, increase by adding 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat this process for the entire row, making sure to end with SC. This will create a rounded shape.
- Show the bottom edge of the cocoon by folding the piece in half lengthwise. Use SL ST to connect the folded edge, being careful not to twist it. Secure the stitches every 3 inches until you reach within 3 inches of the top.
Polka Dots:
- To create the black polka dots, make 8 small circles:
- CH 4, join with a SL ST to form a ring.
- Round 1: CH 1, 6 SC in the ring. Join with a SL ST. (6 SC)
- Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the cocoon.
- Attach each polka dot evenly around the cocoon, spacing them apart as desired.
Finishing:
- Weave in all loose ends using a yarn needle.
- Gently block the cocoon to shape it properly if needed.
- Optional: You can add a matching headband or hat with a small antennae to enhance the ladybug theme!
Enjoy your cuddly ladybug cocoon and all the smiles it brings to your little one!
