Beginner-Friendly Crochet Tote Bag

Materials:

DK weight cotton yarn in two colors: Cream (approx. 150g) and Soft Pink (approx. 100g)
4.0mm (G) crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Measuring tape

Gauge:

To achieve the correct size, measure 4 inches x 4 inches of single crochet stitches. You should have approximately 18 stitches and 20 rows. Adjust your hook size if necessary to match the gauge.

Abbreviations:

ch - chain
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
sts - stitches
rnd - round

Instructions:

Base of the Bag:

Using the Cream yarn, make a slip knot and ch 30. This will be the foundation chain.
In the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sc. Continue to sc across the chain (total of 29 sc). Turn your work.
Ch 1, sc in each st across. Repeat this for a total of 10 rows. This forms the bag's base.

Body of the Bag:

Start working in rounds. Ch 1 and sc in each st for the first row. For the next 5 rows, continue to sc in each st. You will have 10 rounds in total for the main body before changing color.
Now, change to the Soft Pink yarn. Join the new color with a sl st in the first st of the previous row. Ch 1, and sc in each st for another 10 rounds.

Top of the Bag:

Now, to create the top of the bag, we will do a row of sc around the entire top for structure. Ch 1 and sc evenly around. This will give the edge a neat finish.
For extra detail, you can add a row of slip stitches around the top edge. This is optional, but it makes the bag look fantastic!

Straps:

With the Soft Pink yarn, ch 50 for each strap. You will make two.
In the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sc, then sc across (total of 49 sc).
Continue with sc for a total of 4 rows or until the strap reaches your desired length. Fasten off the yarn and weave in ends. Repeat for the second strap.

Attaching the Straps:

Turn the bag inside out. Use your tapestry needle to stitch each strap to the top of the bag, spacing them evenly apart. Make sure they are securely attached.
