Chunky Crochet Tea Cozy
Materials:
- Chunky yarn (super bulky, weight category 6), 100 yards each in red and light blue
- Size N (10 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
Gauge:
5 stitches and 4 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. To check your gauge, crochet a small swatch of 10 stitches and 10 rows, measure it, and adjust your hook size if needed to meet the gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
Instructions:
Base:
- Make a slip knot and chain 32.
- In the second chain from the hook, make 1 single crochet (sc). Continue making 1 sc in each chain across. You should have 31 sc. (31 stitches)
- Chain 1 and turn your work.
Body:
- In this row, you will work in the back loops only. Make 1 sc in each stitch across. (31 stitches)
- Repeat this row until your work measures approximately 10 inches from the foundation chain.
- Change to the light blue yarn at the last stitch of the last row of red and continue with light blue.
Finishing the top:
- Continue working in sc in the light blue yarn for an additional 5 rows.
- At the end of your last row, chain 1 and fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Creating the Button and Buttonhole:
- For the button, make a small circle (about 1 inch in diameter) using the light blue yarn; you can do this by chaining 3, joining with sl st, and working 6 sc into the ring. Fasten off and leave a tail.
- For the buttonhole: On the cozy's edge, count down to the middle point, and create a buttonhole by chaining 5 and slip stitching back to the cozy. You can attach the button securely with a needle and thread or crochet it directly onto the cozy.
Weaving Ends and Blocking:
Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle to give your tea cozy a neat finish.
Blocking is optional; if desired, spray lightly with water and shape the cozy while it's damp to settle the stitches securely.
Optional Variations:
Try using your favorite colors or adding stripes by alternating yarn every few rows. You can also experiment with decorative stitches on the body of the cozy to add more texture!
