Classic Crochet Lace Blanket
Materials:
- Yarn: 100% Cotton Worsted Weight Yarn (approx. 800 yards)
- Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors for trimming yarn
- Tapestry Needle for weaving ends
Gauge:
To ensure your blanket is the correct size, it's important to achieve the right gauge. For this pattern, you should aim for 4 inches = 12 double crochets (dc) and 6 inches = 6 rows in double crochet. Measure your gauge by making a swatch of 20 dc in a row and counting stitches and rows in a 4" square. Adjust your hook size if necessary.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
Instructions:
Foundation Row:
- Make 120 ch (chain). This will give you a width of approximately 40 inches.
Row 1:
- In the 4th ch from the hook, work 1 dc. This creates your first double crochet.
- In the next ch, work 1 dc.
- Continue this way across the row until you reach the end. You should have 118 dc in total.
- Turn your work.
Row 2:
- Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc for this row).
- In the same stitch, work another dc.
- Ch 1, skip 1 dc, and in the next dc, work 2 dc (this creates your first lace section).
- Repeat (ch 1, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in the next dc) across the row until the last stitch.
- End with 1 dc in the last stitch to maintain the count. Turn your work.
Row 3:
- Ch 3, and in the same stitch, work another dc (the beginning of your lace).
- Continue the lace pattern as established, only now you’ll be working 2 dc in each chain space from the previous row.
- Repeat until the end, making sure to finish with 1 dc in the last dc. Turn your work.
Continue repeating Rows 2 and 3 until your blanket reaches the desired length. Aim for around 48 inches long for a lovely throw size.
Finishing:
- When you reach the desired length, finish with a final row of dc to create a cleaner edge.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it through the final loop to secure.
- Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
- If desired, block your blanket by gently stretching it into shape and securing it with pins until dry.
Optional Variations:
Feel free to experiment with different colors or yarn weights to customize the look of your blanket. You can also add a simple scalloped edge for a decorative finish by working (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in every third space along the border.
