Classic Garter Stitch Knit Bowtie

This timeless knit bowtie is simple, flat, and entirely made in garter stitch. It’s perfect for formal outfits, photoshoots, or as a handmade gift. You can wear it with an adjustable strap or attach it to an elastic band — even a pet collar!

Materials
– DK or worsted weight yarn (approx. 15g)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Optional: elastic band or button, hot glue

Instructions

The bowtie is made of 2 small rectangles: one for the bow and one for the center wrap.

  1. Main Bow Piece:

    • Cast on 18 stitches

    • Knit every row (garter stitch) for 26 rows

    • Bind off loosely

    • You should now have a rectangle approx. 9 x 5 cm

  2. Center Wrap Strip:

    • Cast on 6 stitches

    • Knit every row for 8 rows

    • Bind off

    • This piece will wrap around the center of the bowtie

  3. Shaping the Bow:

    • Pinch the center of the large rectangle to create a bow shape

    • Wrap the small piece around the center and sew it together at the back

  4. Finishing:

    • Attach the bowtie to an elastic strap, hair clip, or pet collar

    • Alternatively, sew it onto a fabric strap with a button closure
