Colorful Crochet Summer Cardigan

Materials:

Yarn: Lightweight cotton yarn (Category 3), approximately 600 yards total in white, plus 50 yards each of pink and blue.
Crochet Hook: Size H (5.0 mm).
Scissors.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge:

16 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches in double crochet. To measure gauge, crochet a small swatch of 16 stitches and 8 rows, then measure the length and width with a ruler.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)

Instructions:

Body Panels:

Start by making the back panel:

Ch 100 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next 99 ch. Join with a sl st to top of ch-3. (100 dc)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in next st, *ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next 2 dc; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (66 dc, 33 ch-1 spaces)
Rounds 3-12: Repeat Round 2, increasing the number of dc stitches between ch-1 spaces as desired to widen the body.
When panel reaches approximately 22 inches in length, fasten off.

For the front panels, make two:

Ch 52 and join to form a ring.
Rounds 1-6: Repeat similar rounds as back panel until the desired length and width (approximately 22 inches long and 21 inches wide).
At Round 7, switch to pink yarn and repeat pattern with ch-1 spaces until finished. Fasten off.

Assembly:

Lay the back panel flat and place the front panels on either side, overlapping slightly in the center.
Using a tapestry needle, sew the sides of the front panels to the back (about 10 inches up from the hem).

Finishing:

Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle. Optionally, you can block your cardigan by washing it gently and laying it flat to dry to enhance the open stitch pattern.
