Instructions:
Creating the Granny Squares:
- Start with the first square (assorted colors):
- Make a magic ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the ring, ch 2, *3 dc in the ring, ch 2; repeat from * until you have 4 sets of (3 dc + ch 2), sl st to top of ch 3. (You should have 4 corner spaces).
- Round 2: Change color to your next color. Sl st to the corner ch 2 space. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space. *3 dc in the next corner space, ch 2, 3 dc; repeat from * around. Sl st to top of ch 3 to close. (Now you should have 8 corner spaces).
- Round 3: Change color again. Sl st to a corner space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space. *3 dc in the next corner space, ch 2, 3 dc; repeat from * around. Sl st to top of ch 3.
- Continue rounds until the square reaches the desired size (about 6 inches). Repeat for two more squares using different colors if desired. You will need a total of 4 granny squares.
Assembling the Bag:
- Lay the squares out in a 2x2 arrangement with the colorful sides facing up.
- Using the brown yarn, join squares together with slip stitches. Create a border around the entire joined squares for a finished look. Chain and slip stitch around the edges to form a solid edge.
- After completing the main body, fold your bag to form a pouch.
Creating the Strap:
- Ch 60 using the brown yarn. It should be long enough to fit comfortably over your shoulder.
- Row 1: Sc in each ch to end. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 2: Sc in each stitch to end. Repeat until the strap is about 1 inch wide and the length is satisfactory.
- Attach the strap to both sides of the bag by slip stitching it securely.
Finishing:
Weave all ends in using your tapestry needle. Consider lightly blocking your granny squares before assembly to enhance the shape. Make any adjustments to the strap if necessary for comfort.
Variations:
You can change the size of the bag by adding or removing squares, or create a matching keychain using smaller granny squares!
