Colorful Granny Square Blanket
Materials:
- Yarn: 100% Acrylic worsted weight yarn in various colors (approximately 20 different colors, about 100g each)
- Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Each granny square should measure approximately 6 inches by 6 inches. To achieve the correct gauge, make a chain of 10 stitches and work in double crochet until you reach 6 inches. Adjust hook size if necessary.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sl st - slip stitch
- dc - double crochet
- sp - space
Instructions:
Granny Square:
- Start with a magic ring: Hold the yarn in a loop and chain 3 to secure.
- Round 1: Work 2 dc into the ring, then *ch 2, 3 dc into the ring*. Repeat from * to * two more times (total 3 groups of 3 dc). Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), and work 2 more dc in the same space. *Ch 1, in the next ch-2 space work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * twice more. Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
- Round 3: Ch 3, work 2 more dc in the same space. *Ch 1, in the next ch-2 space work 3 dc, ch 1. In the next ch-1 space, work 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * twice more. Join as before.
- Continue in this manner until your square is the desired size (this pattern can make up to 6 rounds). Change colors as desired between rounds.
- Repeat to make a total of 48 squares.
Joining the Squares:
- Lay out your squares in a layout you like.
- With a new color, use the whip stitch method or slip stitch to join squares together. Align the corners of two squares and slip stitch through the top loops of both.
- Join squares row by row until the blanket reaches your desired size (for a lap blanket, aim for 4 squares by 6 squares, which will measure approximately 36 inches by 54 inches).
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
- Consider blocking your blanket to achieve even square measurements and to smooth out any curves.
Optional Variations:
- Add a border: You can add a simple single crochet border around the entire blanket for a polished look.
- Use fewer colors for a monochromatic look or use all scraps for a unique patchwork effect.
Enjoy your beautiful, handcrafted granny square blanket!
