Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp – space
Instructions:
Making the Granny Squares:
1. Start with the first square: Using your first bright color yarn, make a slip knot and ch 5.
2. Join to form a ring with a sl st in the first ch.
3. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then work 2 dc into the ring. Multiple 3 dc into the ring, followed by a ch 2 to create corners. Repeat this 3 more times. Join with sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
4. Round 2: Change yarn to your next bright color. 1 sl st into the next 2 dc, then into the ch 2 space, ch 3. 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into the same sp. Move to the next corner space and repeat. Continue for all four corners, join with sl st.
5. Continue adding rounds, switching colors as you desire until your square measures about 6 inches wide. Make a total of 15 squares, each in different colors.
Assembling the Cardigan:
1. Lay out 12 squares in a rectangular formation that’s 3 squares wide and 4 squares long for the back piece.
2. For the front pieces, arrange 3 squares each, placing them on either side of the back piece.
3. Using your black yarn, join your squares together using a slip stitch along the edges. Make sure to secure all squares well.
4. To create armholes, leave a 6-inch gap on each side of the top two rows. This will be where the sleeves will open.
5. Edge the entire cardigan with a round of single crochet in black yarn for a finished look.
Finishing Touches:
1. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
2. Optional: Lightly block your cardigan by wetting and shaping it to your desired measurements, then laying it flat to dry.
3. Try the cardigan on and adjust if necessary. You can add buttons or hooks to the front for closure if desired.
Variations: Experiment with different square sizes, colors, or even add a hood for a more modern twist!
