Colorful Granny Square Coasters
These vibrant granny square coasters are perfect for adding a splash of color to any table setting! They are a fantastic beginner-friendly project, allowing you to practice basic crochet stitches while creating something practical and beautiful. Ideal for gifting or sprucing up your own home decor.
Colorful Granny Square Coasters
Materials:
- Medium weight yarn (worsted weight, category 4) in the following colors: Yellow (1 ball), Brown (1 ball), Green (1 ball), White (1 ball), and Red (1 ball)
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
To check gauge, make a 4" x 4" swatch in double crochet: You should have 12 double crochets and 8 rows. If your gauge is different, adjust your hook size accordingly.
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch
- sp: space
Instructions:
Base: Color 1 (Yellow)
- Start with a slip knot and ch 6.
- Join to the first ch with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in the ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in the ring; repeat from * two more times. Join to top of the beginning ch 3 with a sl st. (You will have 3 ch-2 spaces)
- Round 2: Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp. *In the next ch-2 space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; repeat from * two more times. Join to top of the beginning ch 3.
- Round 3: Repeat Round 2 using the next color (Brown) and join.
- Round 4: Repeat Round 3 using the next color (Green) and join.
- Round 5: Repeat Round 4 using the next color (White) and join.
- Round 6: Repeat Round 5 using the last color (Red) and join.
At this point, you should have a complete granny square. Each round will add a layer to the square, making it larger and more colorful!
Finishing:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail to weave in. Use your tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends at the back of the coaster.
- To block your coasters, lightly spray them with water and shape them to the desired size. Let them dry flat.
