Instructions:
Granny Squares (make 5 squares):
- Make a magic ring. If you're unsure how to do this, simply ch 4 and join to form a ring.
- Round 1: (In the ring) ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2* repeat from * to * two more times, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (You will have 4 clusters of 3 dc with 2 ch spaces in between.)
- Round 2: Slip stitch to the first ch space, in the space: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (first corner made). In the next ch space: *3 dc*, repeat this in the next two ch spaces to create three more corners. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. You should now have a square shape.
- Continue to make squares, changing yarn colors as desired. You can switch colors at the end of each round to create a multi-colored granny square.
Assembly:
- Once you have made 5 granny squares (2 for the front, 2 for the back, and 1 for the center band), lay them out in a style you like. The center square will connect the two front squares.
- Using a slip stitch or whip stitch, seam the squares together. For the center piece, connect the front squares by sewing the top edges together.
- Now attach the back squares in the same manner, ensuring they are aligned with the front panels.
Straps:
- For the straps, you will chain a length of about 40 ch. This can be adjusted to fit comfortably over your shoulders.
- Attach each end of the strap to the top corners of the front squares using sl st.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
- For added durability, consider blocking your crop top. This will help the squares lay flat and look crisp.
- To block, gently wash your top, then lay it flat on a surface and pin it into shape. Allow to dry completely.
Optional Variations:
- Change the size of the granny squares for a different look.
- Add more granny squares for a longer crop top.
