Colorful Granny Square Market Bag
Materials:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in various colors (about 100 yards for each color used)
- Natural cotton yarn for the main bag (about 200 yards)
- H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
For Granny Squares: 4" x 4" = 10 rows x 10 stitches in double crochet. Measure by making a 5" square, then relax and lay it flat to count stitches per inch.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
- rnd = round
Instructions:
Granny Squares:
- With color 1, make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join). Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in ring; repeat from * two more times. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
- Rnd 2: Slip stitch to first ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. *3 dc in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * two more times. Join.
- Rnd 3: Slip stitch to next ch-2 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. *3 dc in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * to end. Join. Fasten off. Make a total of 6 squares.
Assembling the Bag:
- Join all squares together in a row, aligning the edges, using the main bag color yarn. Slip stitch through both squares in each corner.
- Once joined, fold the row into a rectangle (about 15 inches wide), and join the two ends, creating the base of the bag.
- To create the bag depth, chain 1 and sc around the top edge of the rectangle. Continue until you reach the desired height (about 10 inches).
Straps:
- For each strap, chain 80. Sc in second chain from hook, then sc in each chain across. Fasten off.
- Attach each strap to bag by slip stitching securely through the top edge, on either side.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends carefully using a tapestry needle. For a polished look, consider blocking your bag by dampening it slightly and laying it flat to dry. This will help the squares lay flat and enhance the colors.
Optional Variations:
Try using different yarn types for a textured look or add embellishments like tassels to your straps!
