To check gauge, make a small swatch of 12 dc (double crochet) stitches and 6 rows. The swatch should measure approximately 4 inches square. Adjust your hook size if necessary to match the gauge.

Pillow Instructions:

Make the Base Granny Square:

With turquoise yarn, make a slip knot and ch 4, then join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc into the ring, ch 2, *work 3 dc into the ring, ch 2; repeat from * two more times, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (You should have 12 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces).
Rnd 2: Change to coral yarn. Sl st into the first ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, *work 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (You should have 24 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces).
Rnd 3: Change to light gray yarn. Sl st into the first ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, *work 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (You should have 36 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces).
Rnd 4: Change to dark gray yarn. Sl st into the first ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, *work 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (You should have 48 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces).

Complete the Square:

Continue adding rounds in the same manner you just did, alternating colors as desired, until your square measures approximately 20 inches square (or desired size).
Once you've reached the size, fasten off and weave in the ends with a yarn needle.

Finishing:

Lay your completed granny square flat. Using a yarn needle, sew the two squares together with your choice of yarn (you can match one of the colors used in the square).
Leave a small gap to insert your fiberfill stuffing. Stuff the pillow until it's plump and to your desired firmness.
Once filled, sew the opening closed securely.
