Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (4) in the following colors:
- Red: 1 skein;
- Teal: 2 skeins;
- Beige: 2 skeins;
- Hook: Size I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Each granny square measures approximately 6 inches by 6 inches (15 cm x 15 cm). To check your gauge, make a small swatch of single crochet stitches and ensure that it measures the same size. Adjust your hook size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sl st - slip stitch
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- sp - space
Instructions:
Granny Square:
- Make a Magic Ring: Start by creating a magic ring. Hold the yarn tail and wrap the working yarn around your fingers to create a loop. Insert your hook into the loop, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You’ll have two loops on your hook.
- Round 1: Yarn over and pull through both loops (1 sc made). Now, work 2 dc into the same ring. Chain 2. Repeat this process (3 dc, chain 2) until you have 4 clusters of 3 dc. Slip stitch to the first sc to close the round. Your ring should have 4 corners with chain spaces.
- Round 2: Slip stitch to the nearest chain-2 space. Chain 3 (counts as first dc). In the same chain space, work 2 dc, ch 2, and 3 dc. This creates a corner. In the next chain-2 space, [3 dc] to create the next side. Repeat for all 4 sides. Slip stitch to the top of the chain-3 to close the round.
- Round 3: Slip stitch to the next chain-2 space, chain 3, and work 2 dc in the same space. Chain 1. In the next chain-2 space, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] (making a corner). Continue to add 3 dc andchain 1 in each side space, then finish the round as before.
- Repeat: Continue adding rounds until your square reaches approximately 6 inches. Switch colors as desired after each round.
- Finish: Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop and tighten. Weave in all yarn ends with the tapestry needle.
Assembly:
Once you have completed several granny squares, you can join them together by placing the squares wrong sides together and slip stitching through the corner stitches. Be sure to alternate colors for a stylish design.
Finishing Tips:
- To give your throw a finished look, consider blocking the squares by lightly steaming them to even out the edges.
- If you prefer a softer texture, wash your throw gently and lay it flat to dry.
Optional Variations:
- Use any colors you like to create a unique pattern.
- Try adding a border around the throw with a simple single crochet round in a coordinating color.
