Colorful Granny Square Tote Bag
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (medium, 4) in the following colors: Light Blue (100g), Green (100g), Pink (100g), Yellow (100g), Red (100g), White (100g)
- Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle (for weaving ends)
- Bag frame (approx. 15 inches wide)
- Leather or faux leather straps (two, each about 24 inches long)
- Fabric for lining (optional)
Gauge:
Each granny square should measure 6 inches x 6 inches. To measure gauge, crochet a square of 10 stitches and 10 rows in worsted weight yarn and measure the square. Adjust your hook size if needed to obtain the correct size.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sp = space
Instructions:
Making the Granny Squares:
- Make a slip knot with your first color (Light Blue).
- Ch 5, join with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc 2 times into the ring, ch 2, *dc 3 times into the ring, ch 2; repeat from * three more times (total of 4 clusters), join with sl st to top of ch 3. (You will have 4 clusters and 4 ch-2 spaces.)
- Round 2: Change to your next color (Green). Sl st to the first ch-2 space, ch 3, then 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, *3 dc in next sp, ch 2; repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (Now you have 8 clusters and 8 ch-2 spaces.)
- Round 3: Change to next color (Pink). Repeat Round 2 instructions, adding clusters in each ch-2 space until you have 12 clusters. Fasten off.
- Continue creating squares in a similar fashion with variations of colors (Yellow, Red, White) until you have a total of 16 squares (4 light blue, 4 green, 4 pink, 2 yellow, 2 red). Each square will consist of color combinations as per your choice.
Assembling the Bag:
- Arrange your granny squares in a 4x4 layout. Based on the design, you might want to alternate the colors for visual appeal.
- Join squares together using slip stitch or sc to reinforce the seams. Work through the back loop of both squares to maintain a nice edge.
- Once all squares are joined, you should have a rectangular piece measuring approximately 24x24 inches.
- Fold the rectangle to form the “bag” shape (inside out), and crochet or whip stitch along the sides to secure them (about 8 inches from the bottom).
Attaching the Bag Frame:
- Open the metal bag frame and insert the crocheted portion into the frame.
- Using a needle and thread, sew the fabric around the frame for a neat finish.
Finishing Touches:
- Attach the leather straps to either side using the holes in the frame.
- Weave in any leftover ends using the yarn needle.
- If desired, create a lining from your fabric and sew it to fit inside the bag for additional structure and style.
Optional Variations:
Experiment with different sizes of granny squares, or use a solid color for a more understated look. You can also add decorative beads or embroidery to your squares before assembly.
Blocking:
To ensure that your bag holds its shape, you may want to block your squares prior to assembly. To do this, gently steam with an iron or soak in lukewarm water and pin to shape, letting them dry completely.
Enjoy your colorful, handmade tote bag—perfect for shopping, outings, or as a stylish way to carry your crafting supplies!
