Colorful Striped Knit Scarf
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (about 200 yards total):
- Teal (60 yards)
- Burgundy (40 yards)
- Gold (30 yards)
- Charcoal (70 yards)
- Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
Gauge:
18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. It’s important to check your gauge by knitting a swatch. Cast on 30 stitches and knit until you reach 4 inches. If your swatch does not match, switch to a different needle size and try again.
Abbreviations:
- CO: Cast On
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- St(s): Stitch(es)
- WS: Wrong Side
- RS: Right Side
Instructions:
1. Cast On: CO 30 stitches using the teal yarn.
2. Row 1: K all stitches (this is the Right Side).
3. Row 2: P all stitches (this is the Wrong Side).
4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2: Continue until your scarf measures 6 inches. This creates a 2-row stockinette stitch pattern.
5. Change to Burgundy: Knit in stockinette stitch (Row 1: K, Row 2: P) for another 6 inches.
6. Change to Gold: Knit for 6 inches, continuing in stockinette stitch.
7. Change to Charcoal: Knit until the total length of the scarf is about 60 inches. Ensure you have a final row in stockinette stitch.
8. Bind Off: Use a stretchy bind-off method to finish. To do this, K2, then use the left needle to lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle. Repeat until all stitches are bound off.
Finishing:
- Carefully weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.
- To block your scarf, gently wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild soap. Lay it flat on a towel, shaping it to the desired dimensions, and allow it to dry completely.
Optional Variations:
- Experiment with different color combinations for a unique look!
- Add fringe to both ends of the scarf for a playful touch.
