Cozy Crochet Blanket with Scalloped Edges
Materials:
- Yarn: 2 skeins of bulky weight yarn (approximately 200-250 yards total, e.g., Bernat Blanket Yarn)
- Crochet Hook: Size N (10.00 mm)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
8 stitches = 4 inches in single crochet. To check gauge, make a small swatch with 10 stitches and 10 rows. If your swatch measures 5 inches by 5 inches, you are on the right track!
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- sp = space
Instructions:
Foundation Row: Start by making a slip knot and chain 70 (or any multiple of 4 + 2 for the desired width). This will create a solid foundation for your blanket.
Row 1: In the second chain from the hook, make 1 sc. *Skip the next stitch, make 2 sc in the following stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the chain. Turn your work.
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), make 1 sc in the first stitch. *In the next 2 sc, make a total of 2 sc in the first of those stitches. Repeat from * until you reach the end of the row. Turn your work.
Rows 3-8: Repeat Row 2 a total of 6 more times, adjusting the number of stitches as necessary to maintain the scalloped shape. You should have a total of 8 rows with a lovely texture developed.
Edging: Once your blanket reaches the desired length (approximately 50 inches is a standard length), you’ll add a scalloped edging. Start with a sl st in the first stitch of the final row. Ch 1, then *make 3 sc in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, sl st in the next stitch.* Repeat from * until you reach the corner. This creates a lovely finish.
Finishing:
- Weave in all loose ends using your tapestry needle.
- To block your blanket and enhance the scallops, lightly stretch the edges while damp and lay it flat to dry.
Optional Variations:
- Change yarn colors every few rows for a striped effect.
- Add fringe to the ends for extra flair.
