Cozy Yarn Storage Basket

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton yarn (approx. 150 yards in a neutral color for the basket)
1 ball each of different colored yarns for decoration (choose colors like orange, red, and teal)
Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle for weaving ends
Optional: Fabric or leather strip for finishing

Gauge: 12 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in single crochet. To measure gauge, crochet a small swatch of your basket stitch and compare it to a ruler.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch

Instructions:

Foundation Round: Start with a magic ring. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), then work 6 sc into the magic ring. Pull the ring tight. (6 stitches)
Round 1: 2 sc in each st around. (12 stitches)
Round 2: *1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st* repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
Round 3: *1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st* repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
Round 4: *1 sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st* repeat from * to * around. (30 stitches)
Round 5: *1 sc in the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st* repeat from * to * around. (36 stitches)
Rounds 6-12: sc in each stitch around for 7 rounds. (36 stitches each round) This creates the walls of the basket. Measure your height; it should be about 4 inches now.
Finishing Round: Sl st in the next st, fasten off and weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
