Crochet Book Cover
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn in two colors: Burgundy (Color A) and Cream (Color B) - Approximately 100 yards of each color.
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
- Scissors.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge:
10 double crochets (dc) and 6 rows = 4 inches in pattern. To measure gauge, work a swatch of 20 dc across and 10 rows, then measure the dimensions.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Instructions:
Base:
- With Color A, ch 46. This will form the base of your book cover.
- Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc, then sc in each ch across (45 sc). Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in the same st, *ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st; repeat from * across. You should have a total of 22 dc and 21 ch-1 spaces. Turn.
- Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first dc, then *ch 1, skip the next ch-1 space, sc in next dc; repeat from * across. Turn.
- Rows 4-10: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for the pattern until you reach a total of 10 rows. The piece should now measure approximately 10 inches wide and 10 inches tall.
- Fasten off Color A, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Adding the Edging:
- Switch to Color B. Attach yarn in the top left corner of the work with a sl st.
- Round 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the same corner, then evenly work 2 sc in each corner and 1 sc in each edge stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off Color B.
Drawstrings:
- With Color A, ch 40 for the first drawstring. Fasten off.
- Repeat to create a second drawstring.
- Thread each drawstring through the top edge of the book cover, threading them through the ch-1 spaces at the top edge.
- Tie a knot at both ends of the drawstrings to secure them.
Finishing:
Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle. For a polished finish, block your book cover by pinning it to shape and lightly steaming with an iron, avoiding direct contact.
Optional Variations:
- Add a fun button or a decorative pin to the front for an extra flair.
- Experiment with different yarn weights for various book sizes.
