Instructions
Granny Square Pattern:
- Start your square:
Begin by making a slip knot and chaining 4. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring. - Round 1:
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), make 2 dc in the ring, ch 2, then make 3 dc in the ring. Repeat this 2 more times, ending with ch 2. Slip stitch into the top of the initial ch 3 to close the round. (You should have 12 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.) - Round 2:
Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space. Ch 3, and make 2 dc in the same space. Ch 2, then make 3 dc in the same space. Repeat this in each ch-2 space around, until you reach the beginning. Slip stitch to the top of the initial ch 3 to close the round. (You should have 24 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.) - Round 3:
Slip stitch to the first ch-2 space. Ch 3, make 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, and then 3 dc in the same space. Repeat this in each ch-2 space around. Slip stitch to close the round. (You should have 36 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.) - Continue making rounds:
You can make additional rounds if you'd like larger squares, following the same pattern of increasing the number of dc in each ch-2 space. - Finishing:
Once you've reached your desired size, finish off the last round and weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
Finishing Tips
- Block your squares by gently stretching them to shape while they dry to ensure they lay flat.
- Consider joining your squares with a slip stitch or whip stitch for a clean finish.
Optional Variations
- Play around with color combinations for each round, or use a single color for a classic look.
- Experiment with different yarn weights and hooks to change the size of the squares.
