Crochet Sun Hat
Materials:
- Yarn: Cotton yarn (Weight: DK/Light Worsted, approx. 150 yards)
- Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends
- Pom-pom maker or small yarn for pom-poms
Gauge:
To ensure your sun hat fits correctly, check that 16 stitches = 4 inches in single crochet (sc). To measure gauge, make a small swatch of 16 sc in a row and count the stitches across.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
Instructions:
Hat Base:
- Begin with a magic ring. Chain 1 to secure.
- Round 1: Work 6 sc into the magic ring. Pull tight to close. (6 sc)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sc)
- Round 3: *1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch; repeat from * around. (18 sc)
- Round 4: *1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch; repeat from * around. (24 sc)
- Continue increasing the rounds by adding 6 stitches every round until you reach (54 sc). Your hat should measure approximately 10 inches in diameter.
- After reaching the desired diameter, work 2 more rounds of sc without increasing. This creates a solid base.
Hat Body:
- Next, work in back loops only for the next rounds to give texture. Work 1 sc in each stitch around for 10 more rounds (about 4 inches high).
- If you want a wider brim, you can add 2-3 additional rounds here.
Brim:
- Round 1: In the next round, crochet 1 sc in each stitch, and then for the next stitch, make a *double crochet (dc) in the same stitch, sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around. This adds a nice ruffle effect.
- Round 2: Work 2 dc in every other dc stitch around to further extend the brim, then finish with a slip stitch to join.
Finishing:
- Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving ends. Use the tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends carefully.
- To create the pom-poms: Use a pom-pom maker or wrap yarn around your fingers to create small pom-poms. Secure in the center and trim to shape.
- Sew in 2-3 pom-poms to the top of the hat and maybe along the brim for a playful touch.
Blocking:
If your hat is too floppy or needs to maintain a shape, gently steam it with a steam iron while placing it on a flat surface to hold the shape.
Optional Variations:
You can customize the hat by changing yarn color, adding stripes, or making larger pom-poms for additional flair. Consider using brighter colors for a fun summer vibe!
