Crocheted Coasters
Materials:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in various colors (approx. 50g per color)
- 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Each coaster measures approximately 4 inches in diameter. To measure gauge, crochet a swatch of 10 double crochets (dc) in a row and count the number of stitches that fit in 4 inches. Adjust your hook size if necessary to match this gauge.
Abbreviations:
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
Instructions:
Round 1: Start with a magic circle. Inside the circle, work 6 sc. Pull the ring tight and sl st to the first sc to join. (6 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as dc), in the same stitch work 1 dc, then 2 dc in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the ch-2 to join. (12 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 2, *1 dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch; repeat from * around. Sl st to the top of the ch-2 to join. (18 stitches)
Round 4: Ch 2, *1 dc in the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch; repeat from * around. Sl st to the top of the ch-2 to join. (24 stitches)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Sl st to the first sc to join. (24 stitches)
Finishing:
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in. Use the yarn needle to weave in all ends securely. For a lovely finish, you can block the coasters by lightly wetting them and laying them flat to dry, which helps them keep their shape.
Optional Variations:
Feel free to experiment with different stitch patterns or colors. You can also add a decorative border by working a round of slip stitches around the edge after completing the basic pattern.
