Easy Knit Baby Booties (Flat Knit, Seam Up)

Easy Knit Baby Booties (Flat Knit, Seam Up)

These adorable and soft baby booties are knitted flat, making them perfect for beginners. Shaped with simple garter stitch and a bit of folding and seaming, they keep tiny toes cozy and are great for baby showers or gifts.

Materials
– DK weight baby yarn (approx. 30g)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– Optional: ribbon or small buttons

Instructions

These booties are made in one piece per foot, then seamed.

  1. Cast On:

    • Cast on 32 stitches using a stretchy cast-on method.

  2. Work Sole & Body:

    • Knit 18 rows in garter stitch (knit every row). This forms the base of the bootie.

  3. Begin Instep Shaping:

    • Row 19: Knit 12, bind off 8 stitches, knit remaining 12.

    • Now work on each side separately (you will return to the middle later).

  4. Sides:

    • Row 20–24: Knit 12 stitches on each side separately (you now have 2 flaps).

    • After finishing both, break yarn.

  5. Instep Flap:

    • Join yarn at center (between the two flaps).

    • Pick up 1 stitch from each side to reduce hole.

    • Knit 6 rows across center 8 stitches only.

  6. Joining the Front:

    • Pick up and knit 12 stitches along one side, then knit the 8 center, then pick up and knit 12 along other side = 32 stitches again.

  7. Cuff:

    • Work 6 rows in K2, P2 ribbing or garter stitch.

  8. Bind Off:

    • Bind off loosely in pattern.

  9. Finishing:

    • Fold the bootie in half vertically.

    • Seam the sole and back with mattress stitch.

    • Optional: Add a ribbon through the cuff or sew a small button on the front.

How To

  1. Flat Construction: No knitting in the round required — ideal for straight-needle users.

  2. Garter Stitch Perk: Very stretchy and squishy, perfect for baby feet.

  3. Sizing Tip: For newborn size, follow pattern. Add 4 sts for 3–6 month size.

  4. Make It Fancy: Change cuff to ribbing or add a pom-pom for variety.

  5. Yarn Choice: Use baby-safe yarns (soft, hypoallergenic, washable).
