Granny Square Crochet Pattern
Materials:
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (4) in various colors - approximately 50-75 yards per square
- Hook: Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle: for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Each granny square should measure approximately 6 inches (15 cm) square. To check gauge, crochet a small swatch in double crochet and adjust your hook size if necessary.
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- dc: double crochet
- sp: space
Instructions:
- Start the Magic Ring: Begin with a magic ring (or you can chain 4 and join it with a sl st to form a ring).
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), and then in the ring, work 2 dc, ch 2, and then 3 dc. Repeat this process three more times (total of 4 clusters of dc) in the ring. Finish the round with a sl st in the top of the starting ch 3. Your first round should have four clusters separated by chain spaces. Pull the magic ring tight to close.
- Round 2: Slip stitch into the first ch 2 space. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), and into the same space, work 2 dc, ch 2, and 3 dc (creating a corner). In each of the next 3 ch 2 spaces, repeat the same: 3 dc, ch 2, and 3 dc. Join with a sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
- Round 3: Slip stitch into the first ch 2 space. Ch 3, then work 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, and 3 dc (this creates your corner). In the next 3 ch 2 spaces, work (3 dc, ch 1) for each space (these are the sides). At each corner, repeat (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Join with sl st to the top of the ch 3.
- Round 4: Slip stitch into the first ch 2 space. Ch 3, then work 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, and 3 dc (corner). In each of the next 4 ch 1 spaces, work (3 dc, ch 1), giving you your sides. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3.
- Finish the Square: After completing your last round, cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop. Use the tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.
Finishing Tips:
- Weave in all the ends carefully to hide them.
- To block your squares, lightly dampen them and pin them to the desired dimensions, allowing them to dry flat.
Optional Variations:
- Change up the color scheme for each granny square to create a playful, multi-colored blanket.
- Join squares together using slip stitch or whip stitch for a unique finish.
