Knit Hardcover Storybook Cover (Stretch Fit)

This soft and reusable book cover gives children's storybooks a warm, handmade touch. Designed to stretch around hardcovers while protecting them from wear and tear, it's a great way to personalize bedtime reading or gift a book in a special way.

Materials
– Worsted weight cotton or wool blend yarn (approx. 80–100g)
– 4 mm knitting needles
– Tapestry needle
– Scissors
– A standard hardcover storybook (reference dimensions: ~20×25 cm)

Instructions

  1. Measure Your Book:

    • Open book flat and measure full width (front + spine + back) and height

  2. Cast On:

    • CO stitches to match the book’s height (e.g., 60 sts for ~25 cm height)

    • Use long-tail cast-on or any stretchy method

  3. Knit Body Flat:

    • Work in stockinette stitch:

      • Row 1: Knit

      • Row 2: Purl

    • Knit until piece = total book width + ~10 cm (for flaps)

    • Example: for a 40 cm wide book, knit 50 cm total

  4. Create Inner Flaps:

    • Fold 5 cm of fabric on each end inward (wrong sides together)

    • Seam top and bottom of each flap to form sleeves

    • Slide book covers into flaps

  1. Use Cotton or Wool Blend:
    Cotton adds structure, wool adds softness — both stretch slightly for a good fit.

  2. Prevent Rolling:
    Add a garter stitch border (4 rows top and bottom, 4 sts each side) to reduce edge curling.

  3. Customize:
    Embroider initials, add stripes, or knit in textured patterns (seed stitch, moss, etc.)

  4. Fits Most Books:
    Just measure the target book and adjust width accordingly.
