Materials:
- Yarn: DK weight yarn (approximately 500 yards)
- Hook: 4.0 mm (G size)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: 4 inches = 10 double crochets (dc) and 5 rows in the pattern stitch. To measure gauge, make a small swatch of about 10 stitches and 10 rows, and ensure it aligns with the gauge listed above.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
Instructions:
Start by making a foundation chain of 80 ch (you can adjust the number for a wider or narrower fit, but keep it even).
Row 1: In the 4th ch from the hook, work 1 dc. *Skip 2 ch, work 1 dc in the next ch; repeat from * until the end. You should have a total of 26 dc. Turn your work.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn. In the next ch-2 sp, work 2 dc. *In the next ch-2 sp, work 1 dc; then in the same sp, work 2 dc; repeat from * across. You should end with 3 dc in the last sp. Turn your work.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn. In the first dc, work 1 dc. In the next ch-2 sp, work 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc. *In the next dc, work 1 dc; in the next ch-2 sp, work 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc; repeat from * until the end. Turn your work.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the work measures 18 inches from the foundation chain. This forms the body of the shrug.
For the Sleeves: Once you reach 18 inches, we will start working on the sleeves. Turn your work, and start dividing it into 3 sections.
Work 26 dc for the back and join, then chain 20 for the sleeve and join again to the body. This creates an opening and will allow the sleeve to flow freely.
Repeat the Pattern for Sleeves: For each sleeve, follow the same pattern as the body (Rows 2 and 3) until the sleeve measures 10 inches long. Do this for both sleeves.
Finishing: Weave in all your ends using the yarn needle. Optional: Block the shrug to help the stitches open up and give it a nice shape. This will make your shrug look polished and professional.
Optional Variations: You can also add a decorative border along the edges of the shrug by working a simple sc border around it once completed.
