Macrame Flower Pot Holder

Materials:

  • 3mm cotton macrame cord (approximately 100 yards)
  • 1 wooden ring (4 inches in diameter)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this project, but your finished product should measure approximately 30 inches in length from the top of the ring to the bottom of the pot holder.

Abbreviations:

  • LFK: Lark's Foot Knot
  • RK: Reverse Knot
  • CK: Cow Hitch Knot

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Cord

Cut 8 lengths of the macrame cord. Each piece should be 10 feet long. Gather them together, and fold them in half to find the center.

Step 2: Attach to Wooden Ring

Using the center point of your cords, attach them to the wooden ring using the Cow Hitch Knot (CK). To do this, place the center of the cord over the ring, create a loop, and pull the ends around the ring and through the loop. Tighten to secure.

Step 3: Create the Lark's Foot Knots (LFK)

Divide your cords into groups of 4. Take the rightmost cord from the first group and create an LFK using the adjacent two cords. Repeat this step around the ring, working your way left and ensuring knots are tight and evenly spaced. You should have a series of knots around the ring.

Step 4: Make the Reverse Knots (RK)

Now, take the four cords on any side and group them. Knot the first two cords with RK (cross the right cord over the left, then pull the left cord through the loop). Repeat until you reach your desired length (about 10 inches from the ring), then secure with a tight knot.

Step 5: Weave the Bottom

At the bottom of the pot holder, make another series of LFK with the remaining cords, ensuring these knots are slightly tighter. This creates a secure base for the pot.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Trim the cords at the bottom to create an even fringe. Take each cord to make a decorative tie or simply leave them loose for a bohemian look. Weave in any loose ends to prevent fraying and tidy up your project.

Step 7: Display Your Creation

Place your potted plant in the holder and hang it up in your favorite spot! Enjoy your beautiful macrame flower pot holder.

Finishing Tips:

Consider blocking your macrame piece by lightly misting it with water and shaping it into the desired form. This will help the knots set and hold their shape. You can also experiment with different lengths of cord to create unique designs!
