Round Crochet Coaster

Materials:

Worsted weight cotton yarn (approximately 50g)
4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
Scissors

Gauge:

To check your gauge, make a small swatch of 10 double crochets (DC) and see if it measures approximately 4 inches wide. Adjust your hook size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
DC = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch

Round 1: Begin with a slip knot and make a magic circle.

In the center of the magic circle, crochet 12 DC. Pull the tail of the magic circle to tighten it. Join with a sl st to the top of the first DC to complete the round. (12 stitches)

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first DC), and in the same stitch, crochet 2 DC. In each of the next stitches, crochet 2 DC to increase. Join with a sl st. (24 stitches)

Round 3: Ch 2, work 1 DC in the first stitch, then crochet 2 DC in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around (1 DC, 2 DC) until you complete the round. Join with a sl st. (36 stitches)

Round 4: Ch 2, *1 DC in the next 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (48 stitches)

Round 5: Ch 2, 1 DC in each stitch around. Join with a sl st. (48 stitches)

Rounds 6-7: Repeat Round 5 two more times. This will create the height for the coaster.

Finishing:

After completing the desired number of rounds (should measure approximately 6 inches in diameter), cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in. Pull through the last stitch to secure it. Use the tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
